Rural Business Support (RBS) delivered the Multicultural Communities Business Basics Program to support small and family-owned businesses in the Northern Territory to strengthen their financial literacy and business capability. The program focused on engaging multicultural business owners, particularly those from Vietnamese and Cambodian backgrounds, to build confidence in understanding and managing their business finances.
The program began with a face-to-face Business Basics Health Check workshops in the Darwin rural area, supported by translated materials and interpreter services to ensure accessibility. These sessions introduced participants to key financial concepts, including profit and loss, cash flow and balance sheets, and were complemented by culturally tailored resources.

Participants were then offered one-on-one mentoring sessions with RBS Financial Counsellors, providing personalised support to review their financial position, identify risks and explore practical strategies to improve business performance. This individual support ensured learning could be directly applied to each business.
The program resulted in increased confidence and understanding of financial reporting among all participants, with strong engagement across both workshops and follow-up mentoring. It also strengthened connections between multicultural business owners and support services, supporting greater participation in the Northern Territory’s business community.
