Online Register Helps Farmers Manage Financial Risk |
|
In today’s challenging economic climate, South Australian and Northern Territory farmers face increasing financial pressures, from rising input costs to extreme weather events and market fluctuations. A simple and inexpensive online search before making a significant asset purchase or sale can provide much-needed financial security and help avoid unnecessary risks.
The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a critical risk management tool that allows businesses to register and search for security interests over certain assets. This ensures that both buyers and sellers in the agricultural sector have clarity over ownership and financial encumbrances on key assets, such as vehicles, machinery, livestock, and crops.
The PPSR acts as a single national database, consolidating multiple state-based registries into one system. It helps to protect buyers from unknowingly purchasing encumbered goods and provides sellers with a means to recover assets or their value if a buyer defaults on payment. |
|
 |
Given the current economic conditions—where cash flow constraints are a reality for many primary producers—it is essential that farmers protect their investments. Before purchasing an asset from a private seller, providing credit, or investing in another business, it is advisable to check for any existing financial interests against the goods or the seller.
For instance, if a farmer buys machinery without knowing it is still under finance and the seller defaults on their loan, the finance company could repossess the equipment—leaving the buyer out of pocket.
By searching the PPSR beforehand, such costly mistakes can be avoided.
The process is straightforward: While using the PPSR is optional, it is a highly effective strategy to mitigate financial risks. Given the increasing uncertainty in agriculture—whether due to global market changes, supply chain disruptions, or extreme weather—it is more important than ever to take proactive steps to secure farming assets. For more information, visit the PPSR website at www.ppsr.gov.au or call 1300 007 777. |

In addition to utilising tools like the PPSR, farmers can benefit from personalised support to navigate financial challenges.
The Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) delivered by RBS in SA and the NT offers free, independent, and confidential financial counselling to eligible farmers, fishers, foresters, and small related businesses experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship.
If you are already struggling or concerned about the ongoing drought conditions and other seasonal challenges, we encourage you to reach out to RBS sooner rather than later. |
|
 |
Engaging with the RFCS early allows us to be an additional set of eyes across your business, helping to identify both potential problems and solutions given our breadth of experience in this space.
