Disaster Risk & Reduction

RBS recently led the Small Business Disaster Risk and Reduction Program, funded by the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation, to strengthen the resilience of bushfire-impacted businesses in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island.

Targeted at small and family-owned businesses, the program supported participants to develop tailored Business Continuity Plans (BCPs), equipping business owners with practical tools and strategies to prepare for and respond to future disruptions.

Vinteloper, a vineyard and cellar door in the Adelaide Hills, faced devastation after the Cudlee Creek bushfire destroyed their estate and historic farmhouse. With no clear roadmap for recovery, owner David Bowley sought guidance from RBS through the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation funded Small Business Disaster Risk and Reduction Program.

David’s goal was to strengthen Vinteloper against future crises, addressing risks ranging from bushfires to cyberattacks. He prioritised empowering his team across all departments—vineyard, cellar door, production and sales—to identify potential risks and implement practical mitigation strategies. In collaboration with RBS, the team developed a practical Disaster Risk and Reduction Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

The process included structured team brainstorming sessions to identify and categorise risks such as bushfires, product recalls and customer complaints. Each department took ownership of its specific risks, fostering a culture of accountability and shared responsibility. The simplicity of the BCP supported clear thinking and enabled actionable planning for both minor disruptions and major events.

The development of the BCP led to a significant shift in both mindset and operations. Previously overlooked risks were identified and addressed, clear emergency protocols were established, and collaboration across the business was strengthened. The plan also incorporated new considerations, including cybersecurity and customer-related challenges, ensuring a comprehensive approach to preparedness.

David valued the clarity and practicality of the BCP, stating, “It’s about being considered, consistent and prepared for whatever comes, without the stress.” With the support of RBS, Vinteloper transitioned from a business recovering from disaster to one equipped with the tools, systems and confidence to build resilience and pursue sustainable growth in the face of future challenges.
