Business Support in Central Australia

Rural, small and family-owned businesses in Central Australia are at the heart of the region’s economy, yet they are facing unprecedented challenges. Rising costs of living, increasing labour and input expenses, and declining tourism have left many struggling to stay afloat.

These pressures have been compounded by social unrest and anti-social behaviour, leading to reduced foot traffic, ongoing staff shortages and growing uncertainty for business owners already operating under strain.

Against this backdrop, RBS has re-launched its Central Australia Business Financial Counselling Service. At its core, the program is about empowerment — equipping rural, small and family-owned businesses with the knowledge, confidence and practical strategies they need to regain control and secure their futures.

The service goes beyond general advice. Each client receives personalised support, beginning with financial literacy training and comprehensive business health checks designed to identify risks, strengthen decision-making and uncover opportunities for improvement and growth.

Bill, a franchise operator servicing the agricultural sector in the Northern Territory, reflects the challenges faced by many family-owned businesses in the region.

Three years ago, he took over the business from a long-standing operator of more than 15 years. However, managing the franchise proved far more difficult than anticipated. Bill accumulated significant debt, much of it from high-interest, third-tier financial institutions, placing constant pressure on his cash flow. At the same time, he was navigating staffing challenges and experiencing impacts on his mental health.

After being referred to RBS by the Small Business Debt Helpline, Bill’s path towards stability began. Our team quickly identified the need to stabilise his financial position while also supporting his personal wellbeing. Early discussions with creditors resulted in revised repayment arrangements, providing immediate breathing space. A tailored cash flow strategy was developed to help Bill regain control of his day-to-day operations and make informed financial decisions.

Recognising the strong connection between financial stress and personal wellbeing, we encouraged Bill to seek medical and mental health support. These steps became a key part of his recovery, helping him rebuild focus, clarity and resilience. Regular face-to-face meetings, supported by video and phone check-ins, enabled us to establish a trusted working relationship built on collaboration and practical action.

Today, Bill’s outlook is considerably brighter. He is more stable, focused and optimistic about the future of his business. With renewed confidence and clear financial strategies in place, he is better positioned to manage challenges as they arise. Bill’s story demonstrates the impact of early intervention and holistic support in strengthening both livelihoods and personal wellbeing.
