Ben and Lisa run a small beekeeping business in South Australia, producing raw honey, providing almond pollination services, and selling handmade honey products. Their family heritage in apiculture runs deep, but the past few years of drought and inconsistent flowering left their hives struggling and their income uncertain.
By the time they contacted RBS after hearing about the service through a PIRSA workshop, they were overwhelmed by overdue bills, ATO debt, and the stress of keeping their household afloat. Their home, secured against the business, was at risk — and they admitted they “didn’t even know where to start.”
Their Rural Financial Counsellor (RFC) focused first on providing stability and practical education. Together they reviewed their financial position, clarified their tax obligations, and set up payment plans for outstanding ATO debts. The RFC worked directly with the ATO to adjust projected PAYG instalments to reflect their drought-affected income, preventing unnecessary overpayments.
Budgeting templates were introduced to help the couple prioritise debts and track spending. As Lisa later reflected, “Any money that you do have is going on bills — you don’t get to buy food. I wish we had come to you sooner.”
To alleviate immediate household pressure, the couple accessed an RBS Relief Fund Rural Support Grant, which provided grocery security during their lowest point. “The best thing that helped us out of all this drought support were the Foodland vouchers — that has been the biggest help. They meant that we could still eat.”
With their RFC’s guidance, Ben and Lisa applied successfully for the Farm Household Allowance and additional assistance through Farm Angels. These supports enabled them to stabilise their household, pay urgent bills, and regain control over their finances.
Once the immediate pressures were managed, their RFC encouraged them to refocus on business growth. Together they reviewed pricing structures, diversified product offerings, and planned new sales opportunities at markets and community events.
The couple also used their FHA activity supplement to work with a business optimisation organisation and completed chemical handling courses to prepare for potential Varroa mite impacts.
Reflecting on their journey, Lisa shared, “You helped us to know what was available and how to access it… We had the plan; we just didn’t know how to execute it.”
What began as a crisis became a story of empowerment. Through knowledge, compassion, and persistence, Ben and Lisa have built the confidence and capacity to face the future — one hive at a time.
